Cool and uncool of X/HTML 5 & XHTML 2

To tell you the truth I’m still very confused about these things. For example… why would we still want XHTML and HTML to co-exist? Good HTML code is essentially also valid as XHTML. But who am I to complain about these things…

However… to shed some light on the issue, here’s a nice breakdown of competing approaches to build the new markup language – X/HTML 5 Versus XHTML 2

Accessibility by law

Found this link to what appears to be the Dutch web accessibility law
I understand parts of it but I’d still rather forward you to highlights that can be found on 456 Berea Street and Quirksmode.

I’ll just post some of them… government agencies are required by law to:

  • use strict doctype
  • separate content from presentation
  • use semantic id/class atributes
  • use of forms or scripts as the only means of getting certain information is prohibited
  • script-only links must be generated by JavaScript
  • use of certain html elements is defined specificaly

Now… how do we go about achieving the same or better?

Down the Pipes

Now this is interesting stuff… Yahoo Pipes is what can be best described as feed/data mashup service. It can combine and filter out data from several feeds to deliver ony the content you’re interested it.

Let’s look at one example:

NY Times through Flickr analizes data on the NY Times home page and uses those keywords to find photos on Flickr. Or the one that combines Craigslist appartment search and Yahoo maps to find you an appartment that is close to something (say a hospital or your office). Or the one that combines news feeds from Yahoo!, Google, MSN, Findory, Bloglines, and Technorati.

I wonder if this will help me bring down the number of feeds I subscribe to?

*currently around 230 ;)
