(un)making of the logos

Bennett Holzworth dissects logos from AT&T, UPS, Microsoft and others to see how they were made… out of curiosity.

It was interesting to see the various ways that designers deal with transparencies and gradients in logos. Wether you think logos should always be made out of flat colors or not, it is still helpful to know how others produce their creations.

Evolving newspaper industry

As an introduction – 9 Ways for Newspapers to Improve Their Websites

and then a more detailed look into the problems (and solutions) the industry is facing  – A fundamental way newspaper sites need to change.

A short version of a long story (although people like Zvone should read through it carefuly)…

One of those important shifts is: Newspapers need to stop the story-centric worldview. A news story is essentially a combination of structured information (who, what, when etc.). However, at present that data is not presented in a way machines could process and re-use automatically.

The database will rule the world…

Fighting for better typography on the web

In the past few days two new open letters emerged, both basically requesting that Adobe, Microsoft and Apple start working together and make the web a better/diverse place as far as typography goes.

We’ve had enough of the ol’ Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman & Georgia haven’t we?

Andrei Herasimchuk got the ball roling with An Open letter to John Warnock (of Adobe) asking him/them to release Adobe Caslon Pro, Adobe Jenson Pro, Franklin Gothic, Frutiger, Futura, Gill Sans, Helvetica Neue, Univers & Warnock Pro into public domain so that MS and Apple could include them in future OS/browser/software updates thus making all of us very, very happy.

I’m quite fond of his selection BTW…

Jeff Croft followed up with an Open letter to Microsoft and Apple asking them to distribute the new Vista C fonts (Calibri, Candara, Constantia, Consolas, Corbel & Cambria) for older versions of Windows as well as with all new IE and Office versions and Apple OS X.

These are also quite nice if I may be allowed to say so.

We’re all allowed to dream from time to time… I sincerely hope their dreams do come true though.
