OpenSource & other alternatives

I guess it wasn’t mentioned in my job description but among my regular duties I’ve been tasked to search for opensource/freeware/cheap alternatives to common windows based tools used for video & photo editing, 3D modelling, DTP etc. that are a part of the usual software porftolio in a design studio (web/print/video/whatever).

I found some interesting options that might be of use to someone but to be honest from the start – although many of these are actually quite capable I’ve found a number of missing features that would be a deal braker for my personal use. But if you’re just starting out or are on a serious budget or there are some specific circumstances (that’s why I’ve been researching this in the first place) then these should do just fine.

Just one more thing… some of these might not be free but cost considerably less than the industry standard.

As I said… I’m not switching completely but these might be very attractive to some.

Fall(ing) through fall colors

Last week was eventful in all kinds of vacationing sort of ways. And with trees and everything else draped in fall colors and bathing in sunlight it would almost be a sin to stay indoors. I tried not to… I didn’t get to do all the things I wanted due but I could hardly say it wasn’t worth it.

And just to be clear… all efforts to erect a windfarm up there are a serious blow to the natural beauty of the place with no environmental (or any other) upside. Sadly it’s all about the money, certainly not about green energy or whatever they’re trying to sell us on.
Petition on Mladina website is spot on… all activity up there is nothing but blatant destruction of pristine natural environment wrapped in “environmentaly friendly” packaging.

btw I’m not against wind farms. But rather than following the ironic and moronic practice of destroying enviroment to save the environment I’m more in favor of intergrating turbines into new & existing infrastructure that’s already there. Examples? How about Bahrain World Trade Center? Or the Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou, China?
