Online video and newspapers

In the past few months I’ve been seeing a growing number of newspaper websites posting short video clips to go with their stories. None in Slovenia though (yet). I like the idea but as usual there’s a big gap between a good idea and acceptable execution.
Where’s the point of having an anchorman go through the headlines of the current issue while showing the actual pages etc.? Why the need to push the preview, where’s the added value in that? Newspapers are not broadcast TV stations so why play by those rules?

The way I see it is: readers go to a newspaper website to read. They know how to scan the headlines just fine. There’s no need for a talkinghead introduction with crappy stock photos and tight shots of printed newspaper articles. What you want to do is some aditional, short (very short) footage shot by the reporters on the scene to give the readers an added dimension to the story. It doesn’t necessarily have to be top quality HD video although it should be better than mobile phone quality i.e. better than most things on YouTube.

New York Times has a good take on the state of things.

Decline of newspaper industry (part n)

This seems to be common knowledge everywhere but in our newspapers.

Denis Dunleavy (a professor of visual journalism and reporting) says:In my newswriting classes I always start off the term asking how many students actually have a subscription to a daily newspaper. For the past few years, if a hand goes up, I get really excited.”

Arthur Sulzberger, owner, chairman and publisher of the NY Times: “I really don’t know whether we’ll be printing the Times in five years, and you know what? I don’t care either.”  via LiLoLe
You can appreciate his position when you learn that NYT has 1.5 million visits online daily and 1.1 million subscribers to the dead trees edition.

But still there are newspapers redesigning, changing formats and doing all sorts of things to keep themselves above the surface. Pointless if you ask me.
They should focus their attention on different ways to distribute content (online is just one option) as people are still looking for someone to aggregate content for them. That shouldn’t change in a while.
