This is probably the first time I’m linking to Luminous Landscape, a photography website run by Michael Reichmann. The reason is not lack of interesting essays, simply the fact that most of them are heavily oriented towards photography.
The latest though… should appeal to anyone that is a sucker for awesome cinematography in a movie.
Ten Movies Every Photographer Should See by
Greg Stott is a list of movies that make you grab a camera…. or just make you daydream about going places. Movies made by photographers for photographers. Movies where the plot, acting and everything else was perhaps only an afterthough when they sorted out the visuals (not visual after effects).
Here they are:
1. Baraka
2. Barry Lyndon
3. The Conformist
4. Days of Heaven
5. Dreams
6. The Last Emperor
7. Raise the Red Lantern
8. The Third Man
9. Visions of Light
10. Winged Migration
I would add several more to the list (probably because I’ve only seen one of them – note to self: GET THEM ALL!)
The problem is… none come to mind at the moment.
Anyway, I think these definitely belong up there.
– Diarios de Motocicleta
– The Thin Red Line
– Hero
– Le Grand Bleu
I think I’m partial towards cinematography that just works with panoramic – Panavision 2.39:1 format. I know most movies are shot in scope but only a handful really shine because of it. You just know nothing else matters, nothing else would work, you become one with the movie. Yeah, I know… getting too poetic here.
I’ll try to think of some more movies to fill my best cinematography list… eventually.
