You have to remember that back then there was no email, no internet, and no display screens or interactive terminals. Everything was done on punched cards. Programs were written with pen and paper, following detailed flow charts (if you were so inclined). There were professional keypunchers available, but I preferred to punch my own, which gave me a chance to revise and correct the code as I was writing it.
