Water(bubble)cube opens

The National Swimming Center (the Watercube) in Beijing is now open for business with “Good Luck Beijing” 2008 Swimming China Open… and I’d love to try it out.

A great portrait?

Jörg Colberg over at Conscientious asked for opinions on what makes a great portrait.

If anything can be learned from the answers it is the simple truth… there is no measure of greatness in portraiture (I would add photography in general). Portait work has always been the most unnatural to me and perhaps that’s why I admire those who do great portraits much more than say…those who do great landscapes. There are a great many greats and I won’t go into listing them one by one.

Surfer Tintypes
Surfer Tintypes, Robert Benson

Lately I’ve been drawn to the tintype portraits by Robert Benson who got some amazing results using a petzval lens. Can’t really decide if it’s just the lens or the combined tintype+petzval aesthetics that appeals to me but he nailed it with the surfer. It just works. Anyway… I’d love to try it sometimes.

The other thing that comes to mind is an exhibition by 2nd year students of Media Communications @ FERI. I selected 14 photographs to be printed and displayed in the lobby of the G2 building… let me just say it wasn’t easy deciding what goes to paper. Well, among those 14 are some rather good portraits I’d be more than happy to call my own but alas, I really can’t take any credit. Other than giving them the assignment to begin with and working the lights in the studio session my role in the making of these wasn’t really significant. It’s all on them and I was impressed. Maybe you’ll be too.
