Just a quick note for those interested… YouTube recently introduced 4K into their lineup of supported resolutions (240, 360, 480, 720, 1080, 4K). Obviously the choices of recording in 4K are very slim so you won’t see many films in the near future but it’s coming. Slowly but surely. So YouTube wanted to be a part of it. Nothing wrong with that. Here’s a sample 4K playlist. However, on full HD 23″ LCD screen the results look horrible. I’m going to presume it’s not just the heavy compression. The 1080p option looks infinitely better. So don’t even bother opening the 4K original if you don’t have a damn good connection and a 4K projector, screen or some other way to view it in full resolution. You likely don’t. Or as Ramesh Sarukkai of YouTube puts it:

First off, video cameras that shoot in 4K aren’t cheap, and projectors that show videos in 4K are typically the size of a small refrigerator.

Today I upgraded to the newest WP version 2.9 (auto upgrade) only to be greeted by a blank screen. I didn’t know what caused the error, presuming it had something to do with automatic upgrade process within WordPress, so I logged in via FTP and deleted all the files (other than wp-content folder) and uploaded them again manually. This didn’t produce any results so I went back to WordPress.org upgrade manual where it says plugins should be disabled prior to upgrading (I skipped that step at first). I then deleted my plugins folder and started uploading and activating them back one by one, quickly realizing in the process that the problem was with fGallery. I’ve been planning on moving on from this troublesome plugin for a while now but so far had no time to migrate completely.

I guess this last issue put another nail in the coffin and I’ll try to move on as soon as possible. What happened is that fGallery requires two files in the wp-includes folder that appear to be missing in WP2.9 and that triggered a fatal error while attempting to reactivate the plugin. Since my old galleries still require fGallery to display photos I needed a solution. And it was a simple one, I just copied gettext.php and streams.php from an older release of WordPress. It doesn’t seem to bother the new version and my galleries are working again so until I disable fGallery for good those two files are staying there.

After a few years of status quo on appenzeller-sennenhund.si I finally got the ball rolling again with a few face lifts, liposuction and botox injections. In other words I changed the look, content and structure of some sections of the website to bring it up to date :)

//tech stuff
Notice the use of Vista C-fonts (if you have them), general adherence to HTML strict doctype (not all sub pages have been updated yet though) and an attempt to get the entire thing off unnecessary markup. We’ll get there eventually :) //

Things are bound to change further in the coming days and weeks but nothing major is planned for the immediate future. I am hoping to eventually transfer everything over to my own server and wordpress to make things just a smidgen easier but for now it stays basically as it is.

All new content is dedicated to Hanibal (since he’s now a fully certified stud) :p and we’re ready to start showing him off anywhere there’s a chance to see a concentration of lady appenzellers. Next stop IHA St. Gallen.

Admin side of things worked the way it always did but not so up front. The photos were all there on the server but nobody could see them (unless you entered the direct URL).

Untill I clicked on update Mod ReWrite button that is (see fGallery options panel). No idea how this got messed up in the upgrade process since I never went near the plugins folder. That’s it… gallery works.

It certainly is one big update this one… I guess the new admin interface will prove to be an improvement but it has caused me some anxious minutes. The moment I tried to log in I notice things aren’t quite how they’re supposed to be. Admin panel was totally unresponsive taking several minutes to load anything. Google search didn’t uncover any similar issues so I was on my own to figure it out. At one point I seriously considered switching back. In those frustrating minutes I even managed to delete a couple of posts. Managed to recover one from the feed that hasn’t updated yet…

Deactivating several plugins turned out to be the solution but the curious thing is that after I activated them all back it was still working just fine. I don’t know which one might have caused it by I suspect it was DoFollow. Nothing certain though.

Anyway, the site works fine now and I’m getting used to the new look. Sometime in the near future I’ll overhaul the front end as well. The new design is currently in prototype stage so there might be some weird things happening as I begin to test the new theme.

A slight update to this blog… I’ve added my Google Reader shared items to the sidebar underneath the latest gallery photos. I was thinking about doing something like this for a while but I couldn’t decide what to use. Del.icio.us was the favorite for a long time but in the end it’s the ease of use that sealed the deal for Google Reader. Sure, it’s only limited to items in the feeds I’m subscribed to (unlike Del.icio.us) but it will probably do just fine.

So I installed the first beta release of Internet Explorer 8 today just to check how things work and I’m affraid they don’t. Let me just say from the start that this isn’t anything remotely similar to a comprehensive review. I only wanted to check if my sites need any work before this thing goes into final release.

Most sites I’ve checked work just fine but as Murphy would have it… the most complicated one of my own doesn’t. I have no idea what goes wrong but that’s actually not the worst part of it. At first glance the site appears quite normal, no weird positioning, broken lines or silly stuff like that. I should be so lucky…nope. Instead of visible errors I have to deal with invisible ones. That in itself wouldn’t be much of a problem if the invisible part would be anything other than the navigation links. Yup, entire site navigation vanished into thin air and I have no idea why. Maybe it has something to do with floats and clearing, maybe it’s something else entirely. But I sure hope it’s only a rendering bug and not really my fault. It works fine in everything else from IE6 to FF3.

It also crashed (as in – this program has to close, send error report) when viewing this site (FERI @ Uni. MB), it has margin/padding problems with Hotmail and I had to hard reset my computer when I started to write this post in WordPress. That’s the short version of the problems I had untill now.

I’ll ignore the errors for now (since it is a beta version) but I sure hope I won’t end up worrying about yet another problematic browser that requires special attention. Other than that it looks ok ;)
