Hanibal on Krk island, photo by Janja Lebar

After a few years of status quo on appenzeller-sennenhund.si I finally got the ball rolling again with a few face lifts, liposuction and botox injections. In other words I changed the look, content and structure of some sections of the website to bring it up to date :)

//tech stuff
Notice the use of Vista C-fonts (if you have them), general adherence to HTML strict doctype (not all sub pages have been updated yet though) and an attempt to get the entire thing off unnecessary markup. We’ll get there eventually :) //

Things are bound to change further in the coming days and weeks but nothing major is planned for the immediate future. I am hoping to eventually transfer everything over to my own server and wordpress to make things just a smidgen easier but for now it stays basically as it is.

All new content is dedicated to Hanibal (since he’s now a fully certified stud) :p and we’re ready to start showing him off anywhere there’s a chance to see a concentration of lady appenzellers. Next stop IHA St. Gallen.

Years ago, in what feels almost like another life, I contributed a minor part towards development of a student project at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. That project is now complete and the result is absolutely light years beyond what I expected at the time. They blew me away!

Photo copyright by Alan Orlič Belšak & StudentRoadster.com

It was the turn of the millennium when a few guys, students at the end of their B Sc, decided to build their own car. At the time me and a friend from high school joined the team, the project had a really bad name for some reason, Frog-K, now changed thankfully (however the car should still have at least a nickname). Those were my first weeks at university and I was keen to do something on a practical level, rather than listen to boring theory day in and day out.

As it turned out the project didn’t really seem to be going anywhere fast at the time and it was all still on a very theoretical, vaporware level. All the contributions were done as thesis projects, seminars for extra points at certain courses etc. and although we did have a donor car (Peugeot 406) nothing substantial, dare I say dirty, was being done back then. I wanted a hands-on approach not calculations and writing reports. I had much to learn…

My assignment on transmission/power transfer settings using data from Peugeot 406 1.6l engine and transmission was completed fairly quickly but after that I pretty much gave up on the deal. It seemed to me that nothing will ever get done at the pace and direction it was going.

acceleration diagram, copyright: StudentRoadster/Jernej Burkeljca

I stayed on at the faculty for another year before quitting and moving on to other things. And I all but forgot about that little car. Until about a year ago when I saw an article in some magazine saying it was nearly completed. It caught my interest to say the least. The thing was beautiful.

For some reason it crept into my mind a few days ago and I went looking for more news about it. The end result was stunning. I was more than proven wrong and for that I applaud the entire team that worked on it over the years.

Most links I find interesting end up in my Google reader shared items feed but this one was special. I took the Nerve.com design quiz and this was my result:

You got 12 out of 20 correct.

You’re a Tasteful Trend Watcher. You’ve got a copy of Metropolis magazine on your Design Within Reach coffee table, a MacBook on your Ralph Lauren four-post bed and an area rug from the high-end of Target. Your clothes are vintage, or from Perry Ellis, Ben Sherman, Diesel or Betsy Johnson. You’re thinking of trading in your Mini Cooper for something equally green. You’ve been saving up for an iPhone, and wondering if you’re too old to pull off a Von Dutch cap. You’re not too old, my friend — wear it with those patterned Chucks high-tops.

As some might know… nothing in this could be further from the truth. It’s just painfully off base… iPhone, MacBook??!! Seriously…they’ve got to be kidding. I wonder what it would say if I got something like 18 correct?! ;)

Subvert posted a list of what they think are top 10 interactive design agencies but, as is common with such lists, the debate continues. Nobody denies their excellence but some dispute it should be renamed into “top web standards development agencies” or some such… that there are many agencies that rank higher, operate with higher budgets, attract bigger clients etc.

I think that’s a valid argument, after all… if you’re a fortune 500 CEO you likely don’t really give a damn about web standards. You want the job done regardless of how things work underneath. The Subvert list basically gives you a runthrough of standardista blog movement celebrities ignoring the much larger segment of the “real world agencies” that just get the job done (and get paid by people who don’t care and can afford not to care).

However, they should all strive to become the top 10 on Subvert list…
